Huawei P10 and P10 Plus Announced With Dual Leica Camera Setup, 4.5G Support, & More

Huawei today unveiled its latest flagship handset for the European market, the P10 and P10 Plus. Successor to the P9 from last year, Huawei has launched the P10 in two different variants this year to cater to a wider range of customers.

Both handsets are less than 7mm thin and feature a hyper diamond-cut finish that is scratch resistant, resists fingerprint, and aids ergonomics by making the device more grippy. This new finish will only be available with certain colors though. The Huawei P10 and P10 Plus will be available in a multitude of colors including Graphite Black, Rose Gold, Silver, and White.

The P10 is the smaller of the two handsets and sports a 5.1-inch Full HD IPS LCD display. The P10 Plus, on the other hand, packs a 5.5-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display.

Internally, both phones are powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 960 chipset. This is an octa-core chip comprising of four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and four low-power Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.8GHz. There is also an ARM Mali-G71 MP8 GPU paired with the chipset.

The P10 is powered by a 3200mAh battery, while the P10 Plus packs a 3750mAh battery. Both phones also come with Huawei’s own Super Charge technology. The P10 will be available with 64GB of storage space, while the P10 Plus will be available in 64GB and 128GB storage variants.

Huawei says that the P10 and P10 Plus are the world’s first ‘4.5G’ phone. It comes with a 4×4 MIMO antenna that ensures faster download speeds and stronger connectivity.

The P10 Plus sports a 20MP monochrome sensor that is paired with a bigger 12MP RGB sensor with OIS and. Both camera sensors make use of Leica’s SUMMILUX-H f/1.8 aperture lens and feature 4-in-1 hybrid autofocus that makes use of laserAF sensor as well. They also feature Huawei’s own custom hybrid zoom technology. The P10 also features the same 12/20MP camera setup but with an f/2.2 lens.

Huawei’s excellent manual camera mode is available on both devices, and they also record 4K videos using H.265 codec for a 50 percent reduction in space. Taking advantage of its partnership with Leica, the P10 and P10 Plus come with Leica’s Portraiture mode.

The selfie camera now also features a Leica lens and is now paired with a sensor that is twice as bright as before. It now features an 8MP sensor with an f/1.8 lens.

On the software front, the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus run on Huawei’s latest Emotion UI — v5.1 — that is now based on Android 7.0 Nougat. Huawei has tweaked every aspect of its skin and OS to improve app loading times by as much as 30 percent. The new video highlights feature in the Gallery app of the P10 is powered by GoPro and offers similar functionality as HTC’s Zoe and Google Photos’ automatic video creation.

The Huawei P10 and P10 Plus will be launching in the UK for €649 and €699, respectively. The topped up variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage space will be released later this year for €799.
